Your toothbrush can experience severe wear and tear if you don’t take good care of it. This is why it’s important to do all you can to keep your brush in tip-top shape. To help you do so, our Derek C. Barnes, DMD dental team encourages you to do the following things:
No. 1: Clean your hands
Make sure you wash your hands before you brush your teeth. This is important because if you forget to wash, there is a chance the germs from your hands can transfer to your toothbrush, promoting infection and even disease.
No. 2: Give your brush space
It’s best to store your toothbrush in a place where it won’t touch other toothbrushes. If your brush touches your family members’ toothbrush bristles, then the germs from their brush can move on over to your brush. This is especially disconcerting if your family member has been sick.
No. 3: Let your brush dry
Wet bristles can cause trouble, which is why it’s important to let your toothbrush dry before you use it again. If you have trouble with this tip, you can always buy another toothbrush and switch between the two to let them dry properly. Also, if you have a toothbrush cover, make sure the bristles are dry before you put the cover on the brush. This can help you avoid creating a moist and bacterial-rich environment around your bristles.
No. 4: Don’t share
No matter what, don’t share your toothbrush with anyone—not even your family members. Doing so can easily spread germs and even promote tooth decay. So, if possible, always stash an extra toothbrush in your bathroom drawer.
If you do these things, you’ll be taking good care of your toothbrush as well as your smile and oral health.
